Melvin Kunukau Jr.
Melvin Kupuauiokalani Kunukau Jr., 34 of Wai’anae, Hawai’i, died Jan. 21, 2002 in Wai’anae, Hawai’i.
Born on Aug. 18, 1967, in Honolulu, Hawai’i, he was a Junior Varsity Coach at Wai’anae High School and Waimea High School on Kaua’i. He also coached Makaha Alii Football, and was owner of “Big Kahuna” Productions.
He is survived by his wife, Melanie “Bermodez” Kunukau; one son: Ransen L. Kunukau; one daughter: Destiny L.H. Kunukau; mother: LaVerne H. Kunukau; father, Melvin K. Kunukau Sr., five brothers: Casson (Antoinette) Kunukau, Ru (Nova) Kunukau, Levi Jacobs (Moani) Kunukau, Nainoa Kunukau, Sanoe Braxton Kunukau; three sisters: Emily (Clement) Kunukau, Tiare (Robert) Kunukau, Keaholani (Mana) Kunukau, numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family on Friday, Feb. 15, 5:30 p.m. at Mililani Memorial Park & Mortuary, Mauka Chapel. Wake services to be held at 6:30 p.m. Casual attire is suggested.

Maria Cabral
Maria Cabangcla Cabral of Lihu’e, Kaua’i, died Feb. 5, 2002, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital, at the age of 79.
Born in Makaweli, Kaua’i, on Oct. 12, 1922. She retired from Tip Top Restaurant.
She is survived by her husband: Paul Cabral of Lihu’e; daughters: Priscilla Poller of Mililani, O’ahu; Cissy Gipolan of Lihu’e, Kaua’i; Estrella Pasion of Lihu’e, Kaua’i; son: Richard Cabangcla of Santa Rosa, California; 6 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren; sister: Suzanna Draves of Wai’anae, O’ahu; brother: Frank Escobido of Makaha, O’ahu.
Memorial services will be held at the Kapa’a Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses on Saturday, Feb. 16, at 4 p.m.
Jay Gatiuan
Jay Michael Gatiuan of Kapa’a, Kaua’i, died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Feb. 8, 2002, at the age of 31.
Born in Kaunakakai, Molokai on Jan. 18, 1971, he was a Golf Course Groundskeeper with Princeville Corp.
He is survived by his parents, Jose and Josie Gatiuan; brother, Gary S. Gatiuan of Kapa’a, Kaua’i; sisters, Deborah Carter of Oklahoma City, OK., and Sharon McDonough of Washington, MO; numerous uncles, aunts, nieces and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family at 9 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 15, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church; Mass officiated by Father Coyle will begin at 12 noon. followed by burial at the Kauai Memorial Gardens. Casual attire is suggested.

Masako Hirano
Masako Hirano of Numila, Kaua’i, died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Feb. 5, 2002 at the age of 88.
Born in Honolulu, O’ahu on April 26, 1913, she was a housewife.
She is survived by daughter, Linda (Warren) Miyamoto of Gardena, Calif.; grandchildren, Rae (Brian) Fujimoto of Lake Forest, Calif., and Cyd Miyamoto of Gardena, Calif.; sister, Gladys Ishida of Manoa, O’ahu; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were private.
