A three-car accident Monday afternoon on Kuhio Highway near Wailua Golf Course — the general scene of other serious crashes the past two years — left people from all three vehicles injured.
Kaua’i County Police said a van heading north on Kuhio apparently crossed the centerline and struck a southbound car. The impact forced both cars into the northbound lane, where they were struck by a second northbound car.
The accident took place on the portion of highway near the 10th tee at Wailua Golf Course.
The accident, which sent an undisclosed number of motorists to Wilcox Memorial Hospital for treatment, is still under investigation. Police officers did report that speed is considered a factor in the crash.
Northbound traffic was backed up to Lihu’e from shortly after the accident’s occurrence, at about 4:30 p.m., until almost 6 p.m., as authorities cleaned up the accident scene.
Monday’s crash was the fifth serious accident on Kuhio between the Lydgate Park access road and the golf course in the past two years. In one of them, a Kapa’a man was killed Aug. 6 last year when his vehicle crossed the centerline in front of the golf course and collided with two others, according to authorities.
State highway officials have said there are no immediate plans to widen Kuhio Highway or install traffic signals or other traffic safety devices in the area.
