Kaua’i has another candidate for public office, but which one he isn’t sure yet.
John Hoff, a Lawai small-businessman, became the fifth candidate to pick up nomination papers from the Kaua’i County clerk as a prelude to running for a local or state office. He lost a bid for the state House two years ago, but hasn’t declared whether he is seeking a legislative seat again or one of the three known vacancies coming up on the County Council.
Four people took out nomination papers for council races earlier last Friday, the first official day of candidate filing for the 2002 election -Mel Rapozo, Ray Paler, Bob Cariffe and Ann Punohu.
Council members Ron Kouchi, Bryan Baptiste and Gary Hooser are giving up their seats to run for other offices — Kouchi and Baptiste for mayor, Hooser for the state Senate.
Prospective candidates have until July 23 to file for all offices except the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, which has a deadline of Sept. 6.
The primary election is slated for Sept. 21. The general election is set for Nov. 5.
