The Waimea Menehunes may not have been in the running for the State
Championship, but their 7-2 win over Waiakea Friday afternoon was a
feat that goes beyond the goal of “saving face.”
Prior to the tournament, the Menehunes insisted they deserved one of
the top four seeds in the State Championship, saying they proved to
the HHSAA seeding committee all season they have one of the best
softball teams in Hawaii.
There shouldn’t be any question about it now.
Since the onset of the tournament last Wednesday, Waimea has
ammounted a 2-1 record, with definitive wins over Kaimuki and
Waiakea. Their only lost came to Kamehameha – arguably the best
softball team in the state – and it was by the slim margin of three.
Additionally, the BIIF teams, who get one automatic bid to the top
four seeds since the league is sizeably bigger, has not won a game
yet in the tournament (Waiakea was also on of the four top seeds).
Will the HHSAA look at this and sense they made a mistake when Waimea
and the KIF were left out of the seeding frenzy?
Maybe. But this last win can only help in their plight.
Waimea started off quick with a four run first inning to beat BIIF champion
Waiakea 7-2. Albette Nawai got her second win of the tournament against
just one defeat.
