The KIF is expecting quite a showdown at Bernice Hundley Tuesday night, and thanks to the athletes that teach us adults how to behave under controversial circumstances, this upcoming spectacle will go down for all the right reasons.
People won’t fill the stands to see if the score table accounts for every legitimate bucket. They won’t be there to see if the referees make the right calls or if a prankster will try to turn the lights out at Bernice Hundley.
No, tomorrow fans will be there for something that’s actually important in KIF basketball – something some people tend to forget.
They will be there to see a fierce KIF matchup battling for the right to stick their school flag on the highest rock of Mount Waileale.
Two teams, Kapa’a and Waimea, each coming off early second round wins, will meet in what may be the most important KIF game of the season thus far.
Each team has something to lose.
The Warriors, coming off 1-3 record in the first round, needs a win tomorrow to keep hope alive for second round honors.
The Menehunes, who waltzed through the first round undefeated and have since been challenged by both Kaua’i and Kapa’a heading into the second round, needs a win not only for second round and KIF title hopes, but for assurance that they are the Garden Island team most worthy of representing the island in the State Championships.
If we keep Tuesday’s meeting between the black lines, there’s no doubt this game will be one for the books.
* The Junior Varsity game will tip off at 5:30 p.m. at Bernice Hundley gymnasium in Kapa’a. The Varsity game will start 20 minutes after the Junior Varsity game is complete.
