Kaua’i Micro, a lending firm offering small loans to promising businesses including farms, has teamed up with Dr. Terry Sekioka of the University of Hawai’i to offer courses on essentials of successful farming.
Sekioka is with the UH College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, and beginning in March he will teach classes combining successful farming techniques with successful business techniques, said Larry Dressler of Kaua’i Micro.
Beginning Saturday, March 23, and running for eight weeks each Saturday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., participants will get farming and business basics. Those showing promise and wishing to continue can spend the next eight weeks developing business plans, each Saturday at KCC at the same time.
A similar session beginning the same day and lasting the same duration will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Sometimes, farmers have all the knowledge and skill necessary to produce marketable crops, but aren’t as familiar with the associated paperwork allowing them to keep track of costs of production and other necessary items, Dressler said.
This course will help farmers combine growing and accounting skills to keep farms on profitable courses, he said.
On Saturday, Feb. 23, a session on taxes and other financial information farmers need to file their federal and state tax returns, will be held, also at KCC, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Ed Valko, a certified public accountant who is working with Kaua’i Micro, will lead the tax session. Please call 632-2004 for more information.
