High wind and heavy rain, with the possibility of thunder showers, remain in the Kaua’i forecast for today, with the wet, windy winter weather possibly hanging around until next weekend.
That’s the cloudy news from National Weather Service forecasters on O’ahu.
Kaua’i weather today will be a lot like Friday’s, said forecaster Jeff Fournier, who predicted steady winds of 20 miles per hour and gusts up to 35.
That will create conditions which make good entertainment out of the satellite images the forecasts are based on, as forecasters can actually see the storms moving across the island because of the high winds, he said.
So today, Kaua’i can expect more heavy rain lasting only brief periods because the winds move them out of the area as quickly as they bring them in, he explained.
High surf will continue to hit the eastern shore of Kaua’i, with surf expected to be between eight and 12 feet today. The big surf is expected to hang around Sunday as well, diminishing on Monday.
The whole weekend, including the Monday holiday for Martin Luther King Day, will see more rain than the previous day, with prolonged wet weather and strong tradewinds possibly persisting through next weekend, said Fournier.
On Monday and Tuesday, Kona conditions will mean more steady rain than the passing heavy showers of Friday and today, he said.
The Kaua’i County Fire Department had no reports yesterday of wind-related damage or mishaps.
