Men’s soccer players from around the island reunited on Sunday, following a three week holiday break from the soccer league.
Rested and ready to fight for supremacy, with ego’s at stake, the Wailua Kryptonite took on the Hanalei Soccer Club in a match that could put either team on top of the standings.
The Kryptonite were in first place but had never beaten Hanalei – their previous meeting had ended in a 2-2 draw. This showdown would hopefully settle a preseason of trash talking between the league’s newest rivals.
Six minutes into the game, Hanalei’s Anthony Tangelder received a pass from Cola Lindman, which he controlled and touched past the Wailua goalie for the first goal. 10 minutes later, Nicolas Ciaffone – a.k.a. Batistuta – broke through two defenders, leaving him one-on-one, to score. It was 2-0 at that point.
Wailua was quick to bring it within one.
During the 19th minute, George Alfiler dribbled down the left wing, past his defender and took a shot, which was stopped but not contained by the Hanalei net minder. The ball sat still on the goal line in front of the net set up like a tee ball, begging for Eddie Adams to push it across the line, making the score 2-1.
Leo Antunez, a new addition to the Hanalei squad, chalked up his first tally in his first game for the S.C. As a corner kick sailed in across the box, Tangelder headed the ball back into the center to Tom Green, who then headed it back to Leo, who finished the point with a miss kick that left the goalie not knowing where to jump.
Nicolas Ciaffone received his second goal when Tom Green pressured defender Rob Snyder, forcing him to give the ball up to the feet of Ciaffone, who easily scored un-attested.
Although the Kapa’a Paint Kryptonite battled hard during the second half, keeping the ball in Hanalei’s end, they were only able to score one more goal.
George Alfiler got his second assist when he ripped a cross to Kaena Mayor, who headed the ball into the webbing.
The game ended 4-2 with the Hanalei Soccer team on top of the league. Due to scheduling complications only one game was played on Sunday. Action will continue next Sunday at the Wailua Homestead field.
