The Waimea Menehunes took two games over the Kaua’i Red Raiders at Isenberg Park Saturday, moving them one win away from a well-deserved KIF championship.
It was an Erin Castillo hitting parade in the first three innings of the first game.
The slugger, who had been bashful at the plate up until yesterday, bombed two shots – an RBI triple to center and an RBI double to left – to help boost Waimea to a seven-run, eight-hit drive going into the fourth.
The first score at the top of the first came in the form of a Red Raider error, which sent Ashley Mier home from first and put Shenelle DePeralta on second. Castillo hit her first bomb on the next at-bat, scoring DePeralta. Jamie “Tia” Koerte rewarded Castillo with an RBI single that brought her home from third, and moments later, Ann Gucwa Bucasas would smack an infield RBI to score Koerte.
The score was 4-0 after one.
A wild pitch scored Deparalta in the second, which led to Castillo’s second shot of the day, which scored Daelene Perreira from third. It was 6-0 after two.
A Red Raider error scored Mier in the third – the only run in the inning – and the Menehunes, who were up 7-0 after three, wouldn’t score again until the seventh.
The Red Raiders rallied.
They scored one run in the fourth, an RBI sinlge from Shannon Perreira to score Chelsea “Pua” Klauahine from second, and two more in the fifth – an RBI single from Kainoa Dejos to bring Brandi Texeira home, and a run scored by Sarah Yoshikawa on a wild pitch – and the Red Raiders were able to claw into within four of the Menehunes.
Waimea sealed it in the seventh. The Menehunes scored three-runs, one a Bridget Louis RBI to score Destinie “Maka” Keamoai and the other on an error that sent Mier and DePeralta home from second and third.
The Menehunes clinched the convincing victory, 10-3.
Waimea pulled out a 5-3 win in the second game, although Kaua’i chased them until the final out of the seventh inning.
For Waimea, Castillo went 2-4 with two singles and two RBI’s and Keamoai batted 2-3 and notched one RBI.
For Kaua’i, Kaluahine notched two RBI’s, Yoshikawa went 2-3 and scored two runs and Perreira batted 2-4 with one RBI.
Nawai picked up the win for the Menehunes, who left two runners on base after the Red Raiders had them juiced in the bottom of the seventh.
