The Waimea Menehune boy’s soccer team needed one more win to tie Kapa’a in the standings with a 3-1 record, and they did it Saturday with a thrilling 2-1 victory over the Kaua’i Red Raiders at Vidinha Stadium.
Kaua’i stormed the Menehunes in the first half.
The Red Raiders ‘ Mason Chan notched the first goal of the game – a left-corner beam from the top of the box – to put the Red Raiders up 1-0 after the first period.
But the Menehunes wouldn’t give up.
They blazed through the second period, hustling through the Red Raider fullbacks and getting prime opportunities in front of the net.
James Marques crossed a mid-field pass to Desmond Rodrigues at the onset of the second, which deflected off the top of the post and into the foot of Evan Agor, who chipped in the first Menehune score.
Later in the period, Rodrigues nailed a direct-kick to the top-right corner of the net, setting Waimea up with a 2-1 advantage and eventually icing the victory for the Menehunes.
Waimea’s win presents quite a picture for the finale to the KIF season. If Kapa’a beats Kaua’i next week, they will still have to beat Waimea the ensuing week to avoid a playoff. If Waimea wins, or Kaua’i beats Kapa’a, a playoff will likely result January 30th.
– Girls Varsity –
The Kaua’i Red Raiders shut-out the Waimea Menehunes 2-0 in girl’s varsity action in the last game played on Saturday at Vidinha Stadium.
Despite a solid showing from goalie Tina Moreno, who totalled eighteen saves in the game, the Menehunes couldn’t stop the Red Raiders from sending two through the net.
The first came in the form of a penalty kick mid-first half. Kaua’i’s Kelcie Moreta’s nailed a pretty floater to the just under the top-post leaving the Red Raiders with a 1-0 cushion going into the second half.
Towards the end of the second half, Kaua’i’s Madison Perry hit a top box shot over Moreno’s head to seal the Red Raider 2-0 victory.
Kaua’i dominated in the second half.
Moreno had to block 10 shots in the second period; Kaua’i’s goalie Chrissy Hayduk only had to deflect two. The Red Raiders poured on the offense towards the end of the game, and their fullbacks weren’t letting much get by them in terms of Menehune offense.
-Junior Varsity-

For the girls, Kaua’i pulled out the 2-0 shutout. First goal came from a direct kick by defender Maile Deguchi, and the second shot came from Shauna Tachibana on a pass from Amy Hutchinson.
