Kapa’a 54, Pahoa 53 OT
Seth Yamamoto scored 27 points on 10-13 shooting and netted nine rebound to boost the Kapa’a Warriors to a 54-53 overtime victory over Pahoa last night at Clem Gomes Gym.
Two Pahoa threes gave them a 10-2 lead over the Warriors halfway through the first period.
But Yamamoto netted five boards and scored six points in the quarter, and the Warriors stayed close.
Poor shooting put Kapa’a back 30-18 at the half, but the Warriors would rally in the third.
Garret Danner, who didn’t play significant minutes in the first half, sparked a Warriors run in the third with two money threes and back to back steals.
Although the Warriors were trailing 36-23 going into the fourth, the game tides were shifting.
Yamamoto began to show how he could work the pivot, and with 1:17 remaining, he hit a free throw to round out a three-point play and the Warriors trailed by one, 43-42.
The game would end up going in overtime, where Danner and Yamamoto would hit key free throws to eventually surpass Pahoa 54-53
Kaua’i 64, Hawaii Baptiste 56
Lionel Tomacder had eight points, nine rebounds, and five assists, and Alec Reichle scored 18 points on 6-10 shooting to give the Red Raiders a 64-56 win over Hawaii Baptist last night at the Menehune Classic.
The Red Raiders shot well from the get-go, hitting 3 of 5 field goals and jumping out to an 8-4 lead in the first quarter.
The Raiders poured on the pressure defense later in the first, which led to two straight HBA turnovers and two fast break buckets from Lionel Tomacder and Aaron Racca.
The swarming “D” put HBA in a seven-point hole after the first (20-13).
Three second quarter turnovers and a few lapses on the full court pressure shrunk the Red Raider lead to 27-26 mid second quarter.
But the Red Raider coaches insisted on pressuring the Eagles, and the full court setup eventually paid off.
The Raiders took a 38-29 lead going into the half, and maintained it through the fourth.
Sahara and Racca began working well in the pivot, for the first time this season, and it accounted for a well-rounded offensive attack.
Although HBA began to chip into the lead towards the end of the contest, Bryson Semana and Alec Reichle hit their key free throw shots to seal the 64-56 victory.
Waimea 48, St. Anthony’s 47 OT
Winnie Arios scored 15 points and Desmond Rodrigues snagged five steals to give the Menehunes a 48-47 overtime victory over the St. Anthony Trojans last night.
Four fouls boosted the Trojans to a 4-0 lead at the onset of the first half.
Desmond Rodrigues opened the scoring for the Menehunes with a sweet finger-roll to put Waimea on the board.
It started an instant trend.
Jordan Dizon added two consecutive field goals to tie the game at six apiece. The Menehunes led after one, 11-10.
Waimea came out strong on defense in the second period, limiting the Trojans scoring opportunities and holding them to only 10 second quarter points.
And just when Waimea’s shooting was at its worst, the Menehunes began a nine-point run that stemmed from two acrobatic Winnie Arios layups. Waimea went into the half on top, 25-19.
St. Anthony’s chipped into the lead and a hard fought two quarters ensued. Although the Trojans led 33-31 after three, the game was all tied up in the end.
In overtime, the Menehunes fought off the swarming Trojans and Arios hit the decisive shot to seal the deal. Waimea wins, 48-47, and goes 2-0 in preseason play.
