Kaua’i 56, Pahoa 49
Jason Sahara shot 4-7 for 14 points and 12 rebounds to lift the Kaua’i Red Raiders 56-49 over visiting Pahoa last night on the first day of the Menehune Classic at Clem Gomes Gym.
The Red Raiders jumped out to a 5-4 lead, early in the first, on solid defensive play from guard Bryson Semana, who robbed Pohoa five times in the game.
Minutes later, Semana got a pretty assist from forward Jason Sahara to put Kaua’i up 9-4. Sahara would then convert a gutsy three-point play to give the Red Raiders a 16-8 lead after one.
Kaua’i’s offensive production continued in the second-the Red Raider big men crashed on offensive boards and a crucial three shot their lead to 33-22 at the half.
But they lost their focus, momentarily, in the third, giving up 11 points and scoring only six to have their lead shrink to five before the fourth.
In the last quarter, Sahara ignited the Red Raiders with two key buckets, and with an additional three-point dagger from Aukai Dennis, Kaua’i was able to leave Clem Gomes with their first win, 56-49.
Kapa’a 47, St. Anthony’s 35
The combination of Kapa’a forward Asher Cole’s 13 points, 2 steals and 4 rebounds and Garrett Danner’s 10 points, 7 assists, 4 steals, and 4 rebounds proved too much for a sizeably bigger St. Anthony team last night in the first round of the Menehune Classic.
The Warriors won their first preseason match up in a decisive victory, 47-35.
The Warriors had a slow start in the first, matching St. Anthony’s 10-10 before the onset of the second.
But Kapa’a was able to take the lead with two Gabe Serrato assists-one to Seth Yamamoto and another to Ed Roessler, and the Warriors had a four-point advantage with 3:35 left in the half.
The Trojans were able to squeeze six unanswered points on the scoreboard, but Danner sparked the Warrior offense with a few pretty assists to give Kapa’a a commanding 26-19 lead at the half.
The Warriors were able to maintain a 33-26 lead in the third, despite only scoring five points in the period. But they continued to attack the basket in the fourth and were, ultimately, too much for St. Anthony as they walked away with, not only a 47-35 victory, but a very solid showing in KIF basketball, as well.
Waimea 51, Hawaii Baptist 48
Austin Alquiza’s 11 Rbs were enough to give Waimea a slim lead over Hawaii Baptiste last night at Clem Gomes Gym.
HBA’s offense looked lost in the first period, turning the ball over twice on their first three possessions.
But with the precision shooting of its guards, the Eagles only trailed the Menehunes 16-15 going into the second quarter.
Waimea widened the gap in the second, amassing a nine-point lead on two steals from guard Chelsey Barba and Desmond Rodrigues-each resulting in breakaway layups-and solid rebounding from Alquiza.
Waimea maintained a 29-20 lead going into the second half, but couldn’t buy a bucket at the onset of the third. That was until the theatrics of Winnie Arios landed a money three and gave the Menehunes a 36-26 lead mid-third period.
Waimea’s shooting woes continued through the fourth, as their lead eventually diminished to 43-41 on four Menehune fouls and three costly turnovers. HBA tied the game with 1:23 left in the ball game, but Alquiza snagged a crucial rebound and Rodrigues hit two key free throws to give Waimea the three point victory.
