Kaua’i native Warren H. Haruki, president of Verizon Hawai’i, is the guest speaker at the Kaua’i Chamber of Commerce Annual General Membership Meeting and 13th Annual Silent Auction.
The event is this Thursday, Dec. 6, beginning at 5:30 p.m. with registration, silent auction and no-host cocktails, at the Kaua’i Marriott Resort & Beach Club.
Dr. Leroy Laney, professor of finance and economics at Hawai’i Pacific University, will present his annual Kaua’i economic outlook, and awards will be presented to the Kaua’i Entrepreneur of the Year and Humanitarian of the Year.

Haruki became the 19th president of Verizon Hawai’i (formerly GTE Hawaiian Tel) in January 1992, with responsibility for providing telecommunications products and services throughout the state of Hawai’i.
He is also chairman and president of GTE Hawaiian Tel Insurance Company, Inc., a subsidiary of Verizon Hawai’i, Inc.
Haruki began his career with GTE Hawaiian Tel in 1977 as a rate coordinator in marketing services. A year later, he moved to the revenues and earnings department, where he held several positions, becoming department vice president in 1986. In 1988, he became vice president of external affairs and, in 1991, was promoted to vice president of sales and service.
Active in community affairs, Haruki serves on the boards of First Hawaiian Bank, Pacific Guardian Life Insurance, Hawai’i Business Roundtable, and Boy Scouts of America’s Aloha Council. He is chairman of the University of Hawai’i Foundation, and a vice president of the Blood Bank of Hawai’i.
Haruki also has memberships in the Japan-Hawai’i Economic Council, Young Presidents Organization, and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
He holds a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, and a bachelor’s degree in industrial management from Purdue University. Haruki is also a certified public accountant. He and his wife, Gail, have two sons, Jason and Justin.
