An award-winning film on Muslim fanatics who have urged violence against America is planned to be shown at St. Michael’s Church in Lihu’e Oct. 24.
The documentary, “Jihad in America,” made by Steven Emerson, an expert on terrorism, will be shown after 7 p.m.
Following the showing, Dana Bekeart, a professor of philosophy and religion at the University of Hawaii campus-Kaua’i in Puhi, will lead a discussion on the political manipulation of the Islamic religion.
Jihad is the war waged by Muslims against unbelievers or enemies of Island, carried out as a religious duty.
The film will point out, however, that not all followers of the Islamic religion are bent on the destruction of America, Bekeart said.
The majority of Muslims are peace-loving and shun the religion’s radical elements, he said.
The film by Emerson exposes the operations of radical Islamic followers in the United States from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s, Bekeart said.
“The film points to the attack on the World Trade Center in 1993.
The film traces the evolution of radical members of the religion in the United States and contains footage of some advocating violence in New Jersey, Kansas and Texas.
Emerson, who has reported for ABC-TV, CNN, Fox News and newspapers, is an expert on national security.
Emerson has received awards for the 52-minute documentary, which first aired on public television stations, Bekeart said.
