Even with the loss of nearly 400 jobs in the sugar industry, Kaua’i’s 2000 annual unemployment rate was still the lowest it has been since the state began listing annual figures.
The 6.5 percent annual rate the island experienced last year marks a continued annual decrease begun in 1996, when double-digit unemployment on the island slowly gave way to the current single-digit trend, according to state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations statistics.
Last month, the Kaua’i jobless rate was 7.2 percent, second-highest among the counties to the Big Island’s 8 percent unemployment rate.
There were 2,200 Kauaians out of work in July, out of a workforce of 30,500, and 28,300 people employed. The number of employed Kauaians, and total workforce, are the highest figures since July of last year.
The July Kaua’i unemployment figure continues the roller-coaster ride for the jobless rate, which has fluctuated between rises in January, April and June, and reductions the other months this year, compared to immediately prior months.
Kaua’i’s unemployment rate in July of last year was 6.5 percent.
The state’s unemployment rate last month was 4.8 percent, up from 4.7 percent in June of this year and 4.4 percent in July 2000.
The nation’s jobless rate last month was 4.7 percent, unchanged from June of this year and up from 4.2 percent in July of last year.
