Joseph Costa
Joseph George Costa of Kalaheo, Kaua’i, died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Aug. 10, 2001, at the age of 81.
Born in Kalaheo, Kaua’i on Dec. 8, 1919, he was a retired irrigation supervisor for the sugar industry with the Lihu’e Plantation and he also served in The United States Army, and defended in World War II.
He is survived by his wife: Beatrice Andrade Costa of Kalaheo; three daughters: Carolyn (James) Copelan of O’ahu; Margaret (Bill) Castro of O’ahu; Gwen (Steve) Williford of California; two sons: Joseph J. Costa of Kalaheo; Robert J. (Priscilla) Costa of Lihu’e; one sister: Beatrice Pretti of California; two brothers: Daniel (Dorothy) Costa of Kalaheo and James Costa of Puhi; 11 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family on Friday, Aug. 17, at Holy Cross Catholic Church at noon. Mass to be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. by Father Alex.
Casual attire is suggested, arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kaua’i Mortuary.
Sarah Kawailima
Sarah Kalae Kane Kawailima of Honolulu, O’ahu died at Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center on July 30, 2001, at the age of 84.
Born in Lihu’e, Hawai’i, she was a homemaker and a hula and feather lei instructor at Waianae Culture and Arts Kupuna Program for DOE, CB graduate in 1994 at 78 years old.
She is survived by her sons: Solomon Luka, Prescott, Nathan and Henry Kawailima, daughters: Ruth Pilialoha, Vanessa Becker, and Benji Childers; brother: Hansel Kane; sisters: Daisy Eckersley and Theresa Chapin; 24 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren.
Friends may visit with the family on Friday, Aug. 17, noon, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Makakilo.
Irma Fairall
Irma Fairall, of Lihu’e, died Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, at the age of 89.
Born in Philadelphia and formerly of New Jersey, she spent her last 12 years on Kauai. She loved to swim, knit, and play Scrabble. She left a legacy of knitted Christmas stockings and the many tenants of Sun Village can attest to her creative ability as they have witnessed her elaborate holiday displays. Irma was a kind, generous, and loving person who willingly took strangers in need into her home.
She is survived by her son, Raymond Jobson Jr. and her daughter Joy Jobson; her sister Reba Demyan; eight grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and 3-great-great-grandchildren. Services will be held at10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at Sun Village Recreation room, pupus to follow, casual attire.
Gregorio Macugay
Gregorio Iglesia Macugay of Puhi, Kaua’i, died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital, on Aug. 2, 2001, at the age of 97.
She was born in the Philippines, on March 7, 1904.
She is survived by her two sons: Epifanio (Catalina) Macugay of Puhi; Rudy (Estrella) Macugay of Lihu’e, one daughter: Trinidad (Estanislao) Yago of Puhi; one brother: Tomas (Iluminada) Macugay of Philippines, 8 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, Aug. 18, at Holy Cross Church in Kalaheo from 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. where services will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. by Father Alex. Burial to follow at Kauai Memorial Gardens.
Casual attire is suggested, arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
Dr. Robert E. Stevenson
Dr. Robert E. Stevenson of Princeville, Kauai, died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Aug. 12, 2001. Born in Fullerton, CA. on January 15,1921, he was 80 years of age at the time of his death.
Dr. Stevenson was a retired Oceanographer and director of the satellite Office of Naval Research (ONR) at Scripps Institute of Oceanography in La Jolla, California, from 1970 to 1988. He received numerous awards during his career, including the highest given to a civilian by the federal government, the Meritorious Civilian Service award, which was granted for his work at ONR, Scripps.
In 1989 Dr. Stevenson was appointed the honorary position as Secretary General of the International Association for the Physical Sciences of the Oceans. He served eight years to bring oceanographers around the world together in a unified assemblies where science could be shared and studied globally.
Dr. Stevenson was a WW II veteran, serving with the United States Army Air Corp. He navigated a B17 in the 306th bomb group that flew first over Germany and flew two missions on D-day.
From the NASA Gemini days in the 60s to the present time Dr. Stevenson was an Oceanographer Consultant to the Astronaut Corp. As Dr. Paul Scully-Power, director of Space Exploration for Australia, explains, “Bob Stevenson was the Father of Space Oceanography. He instructed each and every one of them [the astronauts] in the greatest of all endeavours looking at mother Earth and understanding what they saw, and recording that which was new. In this sense he is singularly responsible for one of the greatest treasure troves of knowledge that we have today of the Earth.”
Dr. Stevenson is survived by his wife, Jeani Stevenson of Princeville, and two sons, Robert K. Stevenson of Fullerton, CA; and Michael G. Stevenson and his wife Mary of Alexandria, VA; a grandaughter, Caprice; and numerous cousins.
Friends may attend the memorial service officiated by Pastor Glenn Frazier at the Church of the Pacific at noon on Saturday, Aug. 18. Following the service, refreshments will be offered at the church hall. Casual attire is recommended. Loren Scott Maas
Loren Scott Maas, grandson of E. A. Maas of Wailua, Kaua’i and Saratoga, California, and Betty Rowe of Princeville, died on July 25, 2001, in a diving accident off the Kona coast of the Big Island on July 25, 2001, at the age of 19.
Born May 27, 1982, he was a certified master diver and underwater photographer and was to enroll in the University of Colorado at Boulder in the fall. He had been mentored in the art of free-diving since he was a young child by his father, a world-champion free-diver. He was a counselor with the YMCA in Kona at the time of his death.
Loren is survived by his father, Terry Maas, mother, Suzanne Gallion, step-mother, Beth Maas, siblings Michael Maas and Marissa Maas, grandparents E.A. Maas (Suzanne) and Betty Rowe, aunt Joan Sharp, of Princeville, Kauai, and uncles Craig Maas of Princeville, Kauai, and Clifford Maas of Saratoga, Calif.
