Preseason tourneys promise punch

Football is not the only sport preparing for the 2001 season. Volleyball is also coming quickly, and Waimea High School is getting things started with back-to-back tournaments beginning August 10-11 and continuing August 16-18.
The August 10-11 tournament will feature four boys teams and six girls squads. Action will be held at the Clem Gomes Gymnasium and the Waimea Boys & Girls Gymnasium.
Teams scheduled to participate in the boys tournament are Pearl City, Honoka’a, Kapa’a and Waimea. In the girls tournament will be Pearl City, Honoka’a, Roosevelt, Kapa’a, Kaua’i and Waimea.
Round-robin play will begin Friday at 9:30 a.m. A double-elimination tourney will commence at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
From August 16-18, Waimea will host the biggest preseason boys tournament in the state, when 18 teams will travel to the west side to play.
From the Oahu Interscholastic Association: Mililani and Leilehua; from the Interscholastic League of Honolulu: St. Louis, Iolani, Lutheran, Maryknoll and Hawai’i Baptist Academy; from the Maui Interscholastic Federation: Lanai; from the Big Island Interscholastic Federation: Hawai’i Prepatory Academy, Kau, Kea’au and Waiakea; and Kapa’a, Kaua’i and Waimea.
Round-robin play begins at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 16, and will be completed Friday, Aug. 17. Consolation and championship action will be held Friday and Saturday.
