Cowboys hope to pull the upset
The Kaua’i Cowboys would like to come up with something special Saturday night.
At 7 p.m., Kaua’i’s semi-pro team will take the field at Vidinha Stadium for the Hawaiian Football League regular-season finale. Coming away with the victory will not be easy for the Cowboys (1-3).
Posing the challenge will be the Big Island’s Hawaiian Warriors (3-1), currently in third place in the HFL. The Warriors are coming off a 20-16 win over Na Kani Koa, a team that beat Kaua’i handily on June 9.
If the Cowboys hope to pull the upset, they will have to find a way to score. Kaua’i ranks last in the HFL, with just 22 total points this season. It’s coming off a 36-0 trouncing at the hands of the Hilo Storm (2-2-1).
The Cowboys will also need their best effort of the season on defense. They have given up 74 points in four games, second only to the Windward Hawks’ 162 for most allowed.
Kaua’i’s chance to win may rest on its ability to come together as a unit. The team is a bit banged up after what has been a long season.
The HFL playoffs start July 21 at sites to be announced. Tickets are $5 at the gate.
