Lewis Kight
Lewis Malcolm Kight, 91 of Westernport, died, Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at Hampshire Memorial Hospital.
A frequent visitor to Kauai, he was born on September 8, 1909, in Barnum, W. Va., he was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Mr. Kight loved his times at Deep Creek Lake, especially when he could share that time with others. He most enjoyed treating children to adventures on the water and taught many to ski. He enjoyed his many trips to Hawaii, where his son married and made his home.
He is survived by his wife: Maxine (Hull) Kight; a son, Lewis (Sharolyn “Shar”) Malcolm Kight Jr. of Kauai, 6 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and several special nieces, nephews.
The family request memorials to be directed to Trinity United Methodist Church’s Children Department or Church Choir or the American Cancer Society.
Services were held on Saturday, June 2, at Trinity United Methodist Church, Piedmont, West Virginia.
William Owen
William Milton (Bill) Owen of Bullhead City, Arizona, passed away, April 13, 2001 at Desert Springs Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the age of 71.
Born on June 10, 1929 in Lushton, Nebraska. He graduated from York High School in York, Nebraska in 1946. After High School he spent 18 months in the U.S. Army.
He is proceeded in death by his parents Vivian and Lillian, his wife Nancy, and his brother Robert Owen.
He is survived by a son William Michael (Mike) Owen of Wailua, two daughters: Mrs. Fred (Terrie) Culek of Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Mrs. Dan (Lori) Chandlee of Littleton, Colorado. 2 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild.
His life work was as a Lineman for Hamlin Electric out of Fort Morgan, Colorado. Bill also left several art works behind in the different Communities where he lived.
Erik Walleen
Erik Taylor Walleen, of Queen Creek, Arizona, passed away May 17, 2001 at the age of 49.
Born in Pasadena California, March 14, 1952, hs was a former resident of Kaua’i until 1993. He was employed here as an Airport Fireman and a truck driver for Rego’s Trucking.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Gomez, Walleen, his daughters, Macey and Taylor “Pua” Walleen, his sons, Erikson “Nalu” Walleen and Brian Dalton, his granddaughter, “Tori” Walleen. His mother and father Gordon and Virginia Walleen. His brother Robert Walleen and family. Many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Services were on May 22, at Mariposa Gardens Chapel.
David Silver
David Thomson Silver died June 19, 1901, at Wilcox Hospital at the age of 92.
Born Oct. 10, 1908, in Papaikou, Hawaii, he attended school at Hilo Union, Kalanianaole, and Hilo High School, graduated from the University of California (Berkeley), where he wasa member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, Big “C” Society, and Phi Phi Honor Society.
He was employed in the sugar industry with the experiment station of the Hawaiian Sugar Planters Associaton, and Amfac Plantations on Kaua’i, at Koloa, Kekaha and Lihu’e. He retired as vice president, manager of Lihu’e Plantation Co.
He was active in community affairs including the Republican Party, Civil Defense, Kaua’i Volunteers, Chamber of Commerce, West Kaua’i and Kaua’i Rotary Clubs, YMCA, Salvation Army, Red Cross, Community Chest, and other organizations.
He was a member of the Wilcox Hospital Board of Directors from 1966 to 1977 and served as its president from 1975 to 1976. He also sat on the Board of Directors of the KCC Foundation.
He is survived by daughter Nancy (William) Daniel of Springfield, Missouri; son David E. Silver of Lihu’e, Kaua’i, 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
Burial will be at Lihu’e Public Cemetery on Sunday, June 24, at 2 p.m. Contributions may be made to the United Way of Kaua’i and KCC Foundation.
John Fitzpatrick
John F.”Jack” Fitzpatrick, 84, died on June 8, 2001 in Ventura, Calif.
Born in Forest Park, Ill. on March 5, 1917, he moved to Ventura after completing a 23-year career in the Air Force. He completed a second career with the State of California as a veteran’s counselor with the Employment Development Department and retired in 1977.
Forced to drop out of school in the 10th grade to help support his family, he later enlisted in the Army in 1938. He served his country in WW II with the 25th Infantry Division in the Pacific theater, receiving many awards and decorations. When the Air Force became a separate branch of the military, Jack went with it. After the war, he was stationed in France, Hawaii, and Germany, as an intelligence officer with the Strategic Air Command (SAC). He pursued his education in the military and rose to the rank of Major. In 1974, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of LaVerne.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Charlotte; daughter, Debra (Punohu Jr.) Kekaualua of Kapaa; son Brian (Dale) Fitzpatrick; six grandchildren; sister, Rosemary Conway of Elmwood Park, Ill; cousin Marilyn Bemi of Mayslake Village, Ill; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to any cause benefitting Indigenous Native Indians and Hawaiians, whose history served to make Jack believe that if some of us are denied justice, then all of us are denied justice.
A memorial Baha’i celebration was held in California on June 13.
