Mario Pagatpatan of Lihu’e died at Wilcox Hospital on June 17, 2001, at the age of 51.
Born in Honolulu, O’ahu, on Feb. 1, 1950, he was a supervisor with Rego Trucking.
He is survived by his best friends and companions, Ligia Baylon and Teresa Johnson; parents Jorge and Mercedes Pagatpatan of Waipahu, O’ahu; three brothers: George Pagatpatan of Waipahu, O’ahu, Ricardo (Debbie) Pagatpatan of Pearl City, O’ahu and Melvin Pagatpatan of Waipahu, O’ahu; two sisters: Darnella (Raymond) Baldovi and Teresa (Douglas) Grace, both of Waipahu, O’ahu; numerous uncles, aunts, niece,s nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 25, at Immaculate Conception Church in Kapa’ia with service at 11 a.m. His ashes will be scattered at a later time that will be announced at the service.
Arrangements are being handled by Garden Island Mortuary.
Adelaide Calkin
Adelaide Prioste Calkin of Lihu’e, died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on June 20, 2001, at the age of 88.
Born in Nawiliwili, Kaua’i, on October 20, 1912, she was a tour guide with the tourist industry for Grayline for 17 years.
She is survived by her son: Emery (Elizabeth) Gifford of Lihu’e, two daughters: Marie (Jim) Watson of Florida; Ilona Souza of Lihu’e, one sister: Angela Luiz of Hilo, 4 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, June 23, at Borthwick Kaua’i Mortuary Chapel from 9 a.m. services to be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at The Kalapaki Bay Memorial Park Cemetery. Aloha attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kaua’i Mortuary.
Lewis Kight
Lewis Malcolm Kight, 91 of Westernport, died, Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at Hampshire Memorial Hospital.
A frequent visitor to Kauai, he was born on September 8, 1909, in Barnum, W. Va., he was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Mr. Kight loved his times at Deep Creek Lake, especially when he could share that time with others. He most enjoyed treating children to adventures on the water and taught many to ski. He enjoyed his many trips to Hawaii, where his son married and made his home.
He is survived by his wife: Maxine (Hull) Kight; a son, Lewis (Sharolyn “Shar”) Malcolm Kight Jr. of Kauai, 6 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and several special nieces, nephews.
The family request memorials to be directed to Trinity United Methodist Church’s Children Department or Church Choir or the American Cancer Society.
Services were held on Saturday, June 2, at Trinity United Methodist Church, Piedmont, West Virginia.
Julie Arruda
Julie J. Arruda, long time resident of Kaua’i, died on Tuesday, May 15, 2001 after a long illness. Born to Joseph and Claudina Jervis of Hanama’ulu on Jan. 29, 1921, she was 80 years old.
Mrs. Arruda is survived by 4 children, Carolyn Frank of Mission Viejo, CA; Sharon Teichera of Discovery Bay, CA; Larry Arruda of Costa Mesa, CA; and Phyllis McSwain of Olympia; Wash., 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Her husband of 61 years, Joseph Arruda died in January of this year.
Mrs. Arruda was a housewife and mother but spent many hours giving her time and talent to her church. She loved to knit and made many baby blankets and outfits for the hospital gift shop, as well for friends and family. She spent endless hours creating Christmas crafts and decorations that were sold at fundraisers.
Mrs. Arruda loved to cook, and there was always a never-ending supply of preserves, baked goods, and savory dished being shared with friends and family. She was a member of her church choir and had a beautiful soprano voice. She enjoyed music of all kinds, especially music from the Big Band Era.
Mrs. Arruda wrote social articles for the Garden Island during the 1950s and was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader. She was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary and the Mokihana Club of Kaua’i. She loved to read, her favorite story being “Gone With The Wind”.
Memorial services will be held on Kaua’i on Thursday, June 28 at Lihu’e Public Cemetery at 10 a.m.
David Silver
David Thomson Silver died June 19, 1901, at Wilcox Hospital at the age of 92.
Born Oct. 10, 1908, in Papaikou, Hawaii, he attended school at Hilo Union, Kalanianaole, and Hilo High School, graduated from the University of California (Berkeley), where he wasa member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, Big “C” Society, and Phi Phi Honor Society.
He was employed in the sugar industry with the experiment station of the Hawaiian Sugar Planters Associaton, and Amfac Plantations on Kaua’i, at Koloa, Kekaha and Lihu’e. He retired as vice president, manager of Lihu’e Plantation Co.
He was active in community affairs including the Republican Party, Civil Defense, Kaua’i Volunteers, Chamber of Commerce, West Kaua’i and Kaua’i Rotary Clubs, YMCA, Salvation Army, Red Cross, Community Chest, and other organizations.
He was a member of the Wilcox Hospital Board of Directors from 1966 to 1977 and served as its president from 1975 to 1976. He also sat on the Board of Directors of the KCC Foundation.
He is survived by daughter Nancy (William) Daniel of Springfield, Missouri; son David E. Silver of Lihu’e, Kaua’i, 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
Burial will be at Lihu’e Public Cemetery on Sunday, June 24, at 2 p.m. Contributions may be made to the United Way of Kaua’i and KCC Foundation.
