Water erupted Thursday morning on Kuhio Highway in Waipouli from a roadside hydrant cracked by at least one vehicle in an accident.
The Kaua’i County Water Department said the torrent of water spewed following the accident shortly after 8 a.m. No water service was apparently lost to businesses and homes in the area.
Details on the accident were not available.
The leak was capped when a Water Department repair crew closed the damaged hydrant’s valve, a spokeswoman said.
Certain hydrants located close to roadways are susceptible to being struck and broken by vehicles. Mishaps similar to yesterday’s have occurred in Lihu’e.
