Shizue Agena of ‘Ele’ele, Kaua’i, died at Wilcox Hospital on May 26, 2001, at the age of 79.
Born in Anahola, Kaua’i on Oct. 9, 1921, she was a retired housekeeper with Kauai Surf.
She is survived by: three daughters: Lynette (Joseph) Warren of Nevada, Calif.; Gladys Danielle DeMarco of ‘Ele’ele, and Arlene Okafuji of Crestline, Calif.; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers: Howard (Emi) Tengan of Kapa’a, Kaua’i and Reginald (Mitsuko) Tengan of Kapolei, O’ahu; two sisters: Clara Tengan of San Francisco, Calif. and Grace Nakamatsu of Wahiawa, Oahu; numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit with the family at 3 p.m. on Friday, June 1, at the Garden Island Mortuary Chapel; service officiated by Pastor Leroy Metzger will begin at 4 p.m. Casual attire is suggested and flowers omitted.

Luis Macalma
Luis Macaculof Macalma of Eldorado, Calif., died at University California Davis Medical Center on May 18, 2001, at the age of 91.
Born in the Philippines, Oct. 8, 1909, he was a laborer with the sugar industry for Kekaha Sugar.
He is survived by: one daughter: Luisita (Grant) Gillaspy of California; five brothers: Lorenzo Macalma, Federico Macalma, Gabriel Macalma, Florencio Macalma, Eistaoiop Macalma; two sisters: Genoveva Macalma, Inocencia Macalma, 2 grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, June 2, at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Kekaha from 9 a.m. Mass to be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at the Kekaha Public Cemetery.
Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
John Ortiz, Sr.
John Ortiz, Sr. of Numila, Kaua’i, died at Wilcox Hospital on May 27, 2001, at the age of 88.
A retired mechanic with McBryde Sugar Co., he was born Jan. 1, 1913, in Lawai, Kaua’i.
He is survived by his wife: Virginia of Omao, Kaua’i; two sons: John (Nancy) Ortiz, Jr. of Kaneohe, O’ahu and Benjamin (Ernestine) Ortiz of Las Vegas, Nev.; four grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother: Edward Ortiz of Las Vegas, Nev.; two sisters: Lydia Troche of Modesto, Calif. and Mary (Jim) Eccleston of Modesto, Calif.; numerous nieces, nephews and godchildren.
Friends may visit with the family at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 2, at the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Kalaheo; Mass officiated by Father Keahi will begin at 11 a.m. followed by burial at the Kaua’i Memorial Gardens.
