HONOLULU — Despite all attempts at preparation, Waimea High’s girls basketball team knew they were in trouble against the Kalaheo Mustangs early on.
The opening round of the girl’s state basketball tournament ended in the Menehunes’ 65-14 defeat, despite the players’ best efforts, said coach Elton Montemayer.
They were just shell-shocked,” he said Friday night after the game.
Nerves aside, Montemayer said Kalaheo’s 5-foot-10 Brandy Richardson lived up to the hype about her athletic ability.
“She’s as good as advertised,” he said. “The best player in the state.
Going up against Richardson and her cohorts, Waimea’s Robyn Manuel garnered six points and Melody Manuel scored three points, with the remaining five points split between Virginia Aguilar, Kellie Montemayer and Ashley Hori.
Coach Montemayer said he and the girls would likely stay on O’ahu for the rest of the weekend to watch the rest of the tournament.
“We’re going to try and check it out,” he said. “Even though we lost, it was a good experience for everybody.”
