In a startling turn of events, the Kalaheo Pistons emerged from their 1-7 regular-season record to win the championship of the Kaua’i Youth Basketball Association’s boys’ 15-under division.
Monday at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center, Kalaheo won its semifinal game 65-50 over the Westside Hornets, then had to re-group and prepare to play the championship game against the league’s dominant team, the Lihu’e Wolf Pack.
The teams battled vigorously over four quarters, and the Pistons emerged with the 54-52 victory. Kamu Kawaihalau led Kalaheo with 18 points in the title game. Tab Matsumoto pitched in with 11. Lihu’e was led by Aukai Dennis and Keala Watson with 17 points each.
In the semifinal game, Matsumoto led the Pistons with 22 points. Westside’s Kawika Hepa pitched in a team-high 18.
