On April 5, Hawaii’s 13,000 public school teachers and 3,200 public university faculty members walked off the job after failing to reach an agreement on salary talks with Gov. Ben Cayetano. By initiating the strike, Hawai’i has become the first state to have union workers shut down its entire public-education system.

Association President Karen Ginoza announced Monday they have agreed to postpone court action to settle the issue of health benefit payments. The state will continue to make its contributions to employee health benefit plans, but will be reimbursed if the court later rules in its favor.
