On April 5, Hawaii’s 13,000 public school teachers and 3,200 public university faculty members walked off the job after failing to reach an agreement on salary talks with Gov. Ben Cayetano. By initiating the strike, Hawai’i has become the first state to have union workers shut down its entire public-
education system.

Professional Assembly, issued a joint statement saying talks that started at 5 p.m. Saturday with a federal mediator were concluded at 2 a.m. Sunday.The talks were productive, and, on some issues, the two sides came closer
together, the statement said. But
it said no additional agreements were reached.
