HONOLULU — Kaua’i’s resident population as of April 2000 was 58,463, or an increase of about 7,000 residents from 1990.
That’s the number the U.S. Census released Monday, ending over a half decade of debate on the effect of Hurricane ‘Iniki on the Island’s population.
Earlier post-hurricane counts were extrapolated from the count for 1990 using various formulas, but no direct head count was taken.
Kauai’s population increased by 14 percent during the decade, while the population for the Big Island increased by 24 percent, to 148,677, and the population for Maui County — which includes Maui, Moloka’i and Lana’i — rose 28 percent, to 128,094.
That means one person was added for every seven residents who lived on Kaua’i when the Census was taken in 1990.
