Aging gaskets were blamed for a leaky main water line by the Wailua River on Kuhio Highway that had repair crews working through the evening Wednesday until repairs were completed yesterday morning.
Because the leak was small, no residences or businesses in Wailua or Kapa’a — the largest population areas on Kaua’i — lost water, according to Kymm Solchaga, spokeswoman for the Kaua’i County Water Department.
The repair work involved the replacement of gaskets, she said.
After the leak was spotted Wednesday afternoon, work crews began repairs at 7 p.m. The work was completed by Thursday morning, Solchaga said.
During the work, Kapa’a-bound traffic was rerouted onto a road and bridge that run parallel to the Wailua Bridge. Because the pipework occurred on the ocean side, Lihu’e-bound traffic over the Wailua Bridge was not interrupted, officials said.
