Kaua’i’s unemployment rate in January of this year rose to 7.5 percent, the highest among the counties. In December of 2000, the rate was 6.9 percent, and in January of 2000, the rate was 7.9 percent. There were 2,250 people out of work on Kaua’i in January of this year.
The state’s unemployment rate in January of this year was 4.1 percent, also up from 3.6 percent in December of last year but down from 4.9 percent recorded in January of 2000. The United States unemployment rate was 4.7 percent in January of this year, 3.7 percent in December of last year, and 4.5 percent in January of 2000, according to information from the state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations.
