The hydraulic packer that moves rubbish from the waste hopper into garbage trucks broke down Monday at the Hanapepe transfer station, causing a temporary disruption in service, according to Kaua’i County officials.
The transfer station will remain open to the public while the system is being repaired, which is estimated to take about six weeks. In the meantime, the county will utilize a refuse collection truck to receive garbage at the site.
Because of the facility’s diminished capacity during repairs, a county spokeswoman said the public should deliver only small loads of one to two trash barrels at a time to Hanapepe.
Larger loads should be taken directly to the Kekaha landfill, officials said.
