The Kaua’i County Water Safety Department this morning reopened 25 miles of coastline from the middle of Hanalei Bay to Polihale Beach after dangerous high surf subsided.
The department closed beaches to swimming at 10 a.m. Wednesday after waves ranging from 10 to 20 feet, with some as high as 25 feet, pounded the shoreline, according to Kaleo Ho’okano, who heads the agency.
Wave heights topped off at 10 feet this morning and are anticipated to drop to six feet, Ho’okano said.
“It is still dangerous, but it will be dropping during the day,” he said.
He said his department has closed the same shoreline area at least six times in the last three months due to dangerously high surf, which is common during the winter months.
