LIHU’E — Close competition highlighted this week’s KIF quad meet, as eight different races came within one-quarter of a second between places.
The boys’ 200-yard medley relay and 50-yard freestyle saw three places decided in just over one-half a second. The battle for third in the 100-yard girls’ breaststroke, and the precious points accompanying it, was won by just .03 of a second.
Again, the girls of Kaua’i seemed nearly unbeatable. Led by Amanda Scheppers, who came within five seconds of a Kaua’i Interscholastic Federation record in the 500-yard free, the Red Raiders dominance went unchallenged. Scheppers and teammate Kim Black were each dual winners this weekend.
First-year swimmer Jill Carmichael led Kapa’a in its fight, as it refused to simply concede. One pleasant surprise coming from the girls’ division is Kula School’s Katrina Hettinger, who is participating in the school’s inaugural season of swimming.
Girls team score: Kaua’i 95; Kapa’a 71; Waimea 34; Kula 10; Island School 9
The big story in boys swimming this year is the Waimea quintuplet. With senior Fred Flores leading the charge, the five boys of Waimea are proving that quality can beat quantity. By placing either first or second in every event entered — save one third — the boys again outscored both Kapa’a and Kaua’i. This despite the fact that each of those teams can swim in three relays (double points) and because of rules and limited numbers, Waimea can enter just two.
It is too early to tell if Waimea can hold back both challengers, as Kaua’i has yet to swim all of its eligible competitors and Kapa’a improves each week.
Boys team scores: Waimea 67; Kapa’a 59; Kaua’i 55; Kula 19
