Building a seawall along the coast of Wailua Golf Course has many disadvantages. This is the main reason why I strongly disagree with its construction.
Some of its disadvantages include: ?
It would increase erosion, as the text (Oceanography, Thurman and Trujillo) explains, “Where seawalls have been used to protect property on barrier islands, the seaward slope of the island beach has steepened and the rate of erosion increased. In essence, seawalls destroy recreational beaches.” (p. 321). This only explains that although property owners can benefit from seawalls which may protect their property, the overall outcome of building seawalls is hazardous which may cause erosion. It also explains that, “Eventually, the cost of repairing or replacing seawalls will be more than the property is worth, and the sea will claim more of the coast through the natural process of coastal erosion.” (p. 321) This just explains that, if seawalls were destroyed, we will be using more of our tax money to restore it than the amount of the property itself. So if this will be the case, we are only wasting our money, which we can use for any other programs. And finally, the text explains that, “once waves begin breaking against a seawall, turbulence generated by the abrupt release of wave energy quickly erodes the sediment on its seawardside, causing it to collapse into the surf.” (p. 321) This explains that once a seawall was hit by a big wave, wave energy will be released which will quickly erode all of the sediments, which will make it to breakdown into the surface.
As mentioned earlier, the cost of repairing a seawall may cost more than the property itself. In addition, it may cause more problems such as it may increased the occurrence of erosion.
