It seems amusing that a jaded old journalist would defend the Bible while someone who calls himself reverend would mock it (Forum, Dec. 9), but such are the crazy times we live in.
The Old Testament lists many detailed rules and regulations that God established for the ancient Israelites which made sense to them yet seem incomprehensible to us, but that does not negate any of the Bible’s universal truths.
God’s enduring truths have been under attack ever since they were first revealed to mankind, and yet are still just as relevant as they ever were. For anyone who has never read the Bible, the New Testament is a good place to start. It is a very easy book to read and understand, made easier by the many modern translations now on the market that are minus the “thees” and “thous” and obscure old words. Borders Books carries a wide selection, and the Salvation Army thrift stores have copies for less than a dollar.
Even though it’s one of the oldest books around, it still is the best guide for how we should live. Don’t take an old journalist’s word for it.
Check it out yourself. And please don’t for a minute believe that just because someone is called reverend that he’s smarter than you are. God made the Bible simple so that its truths would be clear to everyone, regardless of education or lack thereof.
The Bible is unlike any other book you’ll ever read. It can change your life spectacularly for the better. And it also makes a nice Christmas gift.
