WAIMEA – It was a rough night for the island’s high school basketball teams.
Playing to sparse crowds at the Menehune Classic in Waimea, Kapa’a, Kaua’i
and the host Menehunes all dropped opening-day contests.
Consequently, the
three visiting schools, Pahoa and Kohala from the Big Island and St. Anthonys
from Maui, all emerged with victories.
A quick assessment of the three
Kaua’i schools, however, reveals that all are energetic, and, after the kinks
are worked out, should be entertaining to watch.
Competition continues
Friday night at the Waimea gymnasium. Games are scheduled for 5 p.m., 6:30 p.m.
and 8 p.m.

In football, ending the first
quarter without a field goal wouldn’t be all that troubling. Basketball,
however, is won with them.
Unfortunately, Waimea could not muster one until
the 7:25 mark of the second quarter, on a Nikko Naumu layup.
The offensive
ineptitude did not paralyze the Menehunes, however. In fact, after finding
their range a bit, and forcing a frenzied pace, the team went into the half
ahead 22-21.
Waimea trailed 34-31 after three quarters, but did manage to
put together a run midway through the fourth period. That run came courtesy of
the Menehunes’ starting five. But wholesale substitutions were made with just
three minutes in the contest, and the second five couldn’t find a way to
continue the run.
Winnie Arios led Waimea with 11 points. Joshua Akana was
the high scorer for St. Anthonys with 11.
Here are the rest of the
scorers.

If one were a betting man, one would bet that the next time the Red
Raiders hit the practice floor, layups will be shot.
Lots of them.
The
shot generally considered the easiest on the floor gave Kaua’i the most
trouble, as it fell to Kohala.
But despite its trouble around the rim, the
Red Raiders never fell out of contention in the contest. They trailed 31-28 at
the half, and 45-40 after three quarters.
But Kaua’i never could get over
the hump.
In following with the reputation afforded most Big Island teams,
Kohala pressed Kaua’i and ran on it consistently.
Jason Kashiwabara led the
Raiders with 16 points. Kohala’s Beau Cazimero scored a game-high 21, and
proved an admirable floor general for his team.
Here are the rest of the

Pahoa 74, Kapa’a 62
The score in this one is a bit
deceiving.
It never truly was that close.
Pahoa led 40-20 at halftime,
behind some hot shooting and consistent ball control. It was evident that the
squad already had three games under its belt this season.
The Warriors
showed encouraging energy in the second half, but Pahoa was just too tough.
Crafty passing and solid jump shooters proved a mighty combination.
Bryan
Bartolome led Pahoa with 18 points. Rhyan Greenleaf scored a game-high 21 for
Kapa’a.
Here are the rest of the scorers.
