this year, it is important that people with the highest risk of serious
complications from the flu are the first to get the available vaccine,
according to the Center for Disease Control.
According to Atlanta,
Ga.-based CDC, Kaua’ians should get a flu shot right now if they:
l Are 65
or older.
l Live in or work at a nursing home where at least some of the
residents have chronic medical conditions.
l Have a chronic medical
condition, including asthma or other lung disease, heart disease, diabetes,
kidney disease and blood disease.
l Have immune-system problems caused by
disease or medication
l Are a child receiving long-term aspirin
therapy.
l A a hospital or emergency response worker.
l Provide home
care to high-risk patients.
Getting vaccinated in late December or January
is likely to protect people from the flu, according to the CDC.
