Put off for nearly a decade, the long-awaited expansion of the Po’ipu Shopping
Village is coming on line, with the application for zoning and project
development use permits now before the Kaua’i Planning Commission.
The
proposal is a $7.5 million expansion, to make way for, among other things, an
anchor restaurant and anchor supermarket spread out over four new buildings and
several additions to current structures at the center, along Po’ipu
Road.
The existing 40,984 square feet of retail and office space, with 200
parking stalls, will balloon to 117,900 feet of leasable space, with 594
parking stalls, on around 11 acres.
One of the new buildings will be a
two-story structure.
The project has the support of the Po’ipu Beach Resort
Association.
“With the upcoming development of Marriott’s Waiohai, the
Po’ipu Beach Hotel and Alexander & Baldwin’s property, we see an even
greater need for expansion of commercial space at Po’ipu Shopping Village,”
said Henry Perez, general manager of the Lawa’i Beach Resort and president of
the Po’ipu Beach Resort Association.
“Already, the shopping complex is too
small for the existing visitor and residential population, by evidence of the
ongoing parking problems,” he said.
The commission has ended the public
hearing portion of its proceedings on the zoning amendment, but has continued
the hearing on the project development use permit. The next Planning Commission
meeting is this Thursday, Nov. 9, at which time the commission could rule on
the zoning application, and continue to hearing on the project development use
permit.
The identities of the anchor supermarket and restaurant tenants has
not been released.
