The state Land Use Commission will resume its public hearing Thursday regarding
a proposed reclassification from agricultural to urban of 153 acres of Robinson
family land at Makaweli.
The hearing will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Puna
Ballroom of Kaua’i Marriott Resort & Beach Club and will continue Friday,
if necessary.
The purpose of the proposed state land classification change
from agricultural district to urban district is to allow Destination Villages
Kaua’i to develop a resort and accessory uses on land makai of Kaumuali’i
Highway, about a half-mile southeast of Waimea River.
The centerpiece of
the resort would be the old Robinson family home, called Kapalawai, which has
sat vacant for several years.
The 250-unit Kapalawai resort proposal
already has a county General Plan resort designation. Destination Villages
wants to build and operate 150 cabins.
The Kaua’i Planning Commission and
the County Council approved the General Plan amendment for the project. But the
commission has continued a hearing on Destination Villages’ zoning amendment
application, which requests zoning changes on the land from open and
agriculture to resort.
Those changes are also required before Destination
Villages can move forward with its proposal.
At the request of the
applicant, the Planning Commission last week deferred the continuation of its
hearing until Dec. 14, or until immediately after action by the Land Use
Commission on the matter.
If the latter’s hearing ended tomorrow, it would
be highly unlikely the state panel would rule on the Kapalawai application the
same day.
