Workers yesterday resumed installing guardrails along Kuhio Highway in after
approximately 20,000 gallons of raw sewage was contained and cleanup began
following its spill from a broken sewer main in Wailua Wednesday afternoon. The
mishap occurred near the LIHU’E end of the Wailua River Bridge. Kaua’i County
officials said the untreated sewage did not reach nearby Wailua River or the
ocean. The spill was caused by a private contractor’s boring tool that drilled
through the 18-inch main during work on the guardrails. Staff photo by DENNIS
