I want to thank the executive committee of the Kaua’i Humane Society for their
attempt to clear up my “absurd misrepresentations” and “biased criticism” as to
the conditions at the animal shelter. (“Questions for the council about Humane
Society,” Sept. 17).
I have nothing but the utmost regard for anyone who
would work tirelessly to see that “all animals receive proper care, food, water
and medical attention, as well as compassion and respect.” The problem I have
is that none of these conditions were in evidence on Aug. 29, Aug. 31, or Sept.
6. It was not a member of the “hard-working, dedicated staff” that found the
guinea pig in its cage so decomposed it fell apart in the attempt to remove it.
It was fortunate a volunteer found it, because I question the adoptability of
such a guinea pig.
Unfortunately, I agree that the need to euthanize is a
reality we all must face. What I do not agree with is allowing the animals to
live in such filth, thirst and hunger that they would welcome the euthanizing
needle when it does come.
The fact that this “executive committee” would
come out in print denying my “absurd misrepresentations” only two days after
the County Council members received film and photographic evidence only shows
how desperately lacking in leadership this organization really is.
If
anyone would care to see the film, call a councilman. They each have a
copy.
