As we’ve said before, what a shame that Hawai’i is practically ignored by both
candidates in the presidential election race. The reasons, as in past runs
for the White House, that the Aloha State gets the cold shoulder are perfectly
logical: Expense and time involved getting here and back, the winner being
decided on election day before Hawaii’s polls close, and, of course, the
state’s reputation as a stronghold for Democrats.
But aren’t Al Gore and
George W. Bush missing the boat just a little by virtually pretending Hawai’i
doesn’t exist, all because both sides assume that the state’s meager four
electoral votes will go to Gore? Come on, the Gore campaign didn’t even open an
office in Honolulu until last Saturday, and then added to the snub by giving
the office $5,000 and 20 bumper stickers to spread the Gore brand. That’s like
giving one kid socks for Christmas and the other one a room full of
toys.
Yes, Virginia, there is a presidential election. Just don’t look for
the candidates under a palm tree any time soon.
