Allan White’s letter regarding the Kaua’i Humane Society was absurd (“Questions
for council about Humane Society,” Sept. 17). His misrepresentations are an
insult to our hard-working, dedicated staff. Our staff deserves recognition and
gratitude, not biased criticism. They work tirelessly to keep an inadequate,
antiquated shelter running at full capacity while we work to complete our
modern, state of the art facility in Puhi.
They have a very tough and often
painful job that most people would not or could not do. We are very proud of
our fine staff. They are the true heroes at the Humane Society.
Our
shelter is a refuge for unwanted, abandoned and mistreated animals. All animals
receive proper care, food, water and medical attention, as well as compassion
and respect.
We invite everyone to visit our shelter. Perhaps during your
visit, you might find time to rub a kitten’s chin or walk a dog in our yard.
Even better, perhaps you might take one of our beautiful animals home.
The
horror we face is the necessity of euthanizing healthy, adoptable animals. The
reality is that there simply are not enough homes for them on Kaua’i.
Tragically, the number of animals being euthanized remains high. It would be
pointless to compare the numbers with last year’s numbers, because previous
management could not provide any accurate statistics. We are trying to put an
end to this horror through adoptions, education and
spaying/neutering.
Euthanasia will be greatly reduced or eliminated only
when we stop the tragic pet overpopulation crises.
