Kaua’i Aquatic Association is a North Shore-based swim team. We have swimmers
of all ages, from toddlers to senior citizens, coached by Dick Oliver. We all
got together to raise some money for a travel fund so that our younger (ages 7
to 14) swimmers could participate in off-island competitions. For a $2
donation, we offered tickets for a drawing. The grand prize was a $250 Safeway
gift certificate, and there were five second prizes of 20 pounds of tropical
fruit from Kahili Farm.
In addition to our friends and families on the
North Shore, the tickets were offered to Safeway customers outside their store
weekdays between July 14 and Aug. 4. It seems that quite a few tourists shop at
Safeway. When approached, many of the visitors announced that they would be
gone before the drawing took place. A number of local people said they weren’t
interested in winning, but we had a suggestion for all these people: Get a
ticket anyway and fill it out in the name of the Kaua’i Food Bank.
Well,
people seemed to really like that idea, and the food bank ended up with a lot
of tickets in our box. On Aug. 9, swimmer Sophia Hurst pulled the winning
tickets. Guess who won the grand prize? You’re right: The food bank.
Judy
Lenthall, executive manager of the food bank, was thrilled and said the gift
certificate would be used to purchase Thanksgiving turkeys for the hungry.
The second-prize winners were Conrad Makarewicz, Ellen Delbene, Marge
Jacobsen, Jeffrey Goodman and Paula Simpson.
