On the list of things not to associate with the glorious Summer Olympics in
Sydney, Australia, gratuitous violence is at the top. So NBC did the right
thing when it pulled a Nike athletic footwear ad from future broadcasts of the
Games.
The ad, which debuted Sunday and was archived Monday after the
television network reported receiving thousands of complaints, depicts a
distance runner fleeing a homicidal maniac hellbent on attacking her with a
chainsaw.
Nike officials said the ad used ironic humor. In reality, the ad
was stupid and in poor taste. Leave the horror genre in the theaters and
late-night cable TV where it belongs.
