As a citizen who cares about good government, I was apalled to see in the video of the most recent (Sept. 6) Kaua’i County Council meeting Councilman Billy Swain take out after a single lady testifying on a development proposal.

of the most recent (Sept. 6) Kaua’i County Council meeting Councilman Billy
Swain take out after a single lady testifying on a development proposal.
And this is not the first time he has been known to wield his personal axe
against anyone he disagrees with philosophically. Thankfully, Councilman Gary
Hooser stepped in to remind Mr. Swain that every citizen deserves the courtesy
of respect within our system of government. Irrelevant personal inquisitions
are not appropriate responses to serious public concerns.
It takes a lot of
courage and civic devotion to try to represent an informed opinion before any
public body. Someone who uses his position on the council to interrogate or
harass the public debases this entire institution and obviously isn’t someone
we should reward with our votes.
