This is really something. Our County Council is actually considering a pay
raise for administration.
Jeez, just think, they will tell you right out
that there is no money…Fees were raised the past couple of years in a
row…Senior funding disappeared, no bus service on weekends and holidays.
What? But these poor, underprivileged officials need more money. Aww, poor
t’ings.
These folks took the jobs, and they knew the timeframe and the pay.
There are 16 people (including the incumbents) running for council and they are
all willing to take the job, pay as it is. I mean, it seems like pretty good
money to do what they do. Did you know that the average per capita income in
Hawaii is right around $25,000? That includes those of us with two or three
jobs.
Here is what the council and administration people get. (Not exact,
but you’ll get the idea):
* Mayor $73,000.
* Administrative assistant
$70,000,
* Council chairman $31,000.
* Council member $28,000.
Prosecuting Attorney, engineer, finance director, county attorney, planning
director $69,371.
* Personnel director, community assistant (whatever that
is) $66,000.
* And the deputies all at $64,000. These deputy positions
have a possible salary range of $56K-$64K, but they are all at the top of the
range.
This really cooks my eggs, boy. It looks just a bit higher than the
average per capita income of Hawai’i-every single one of them. In fact, the
average household income for Hawai’i is only around $43,000. Ahem.
As far
as I am concerned, the additional money in salaries (don’t forget additional
retirement and the continued need for the positions to be filled) would be
better spent anywhere else-preferably on the people.
