Ready for a change? We at The Garden Island have been asking ourselves
that for some time, leading up to what’s in your hand this morning: Our first
Saturday a.m. edition.
It replaces the Kaua’i Times, which was published on
Saturdays but has been discontinued in its previous news and information
format. Beginning tomorrow, Kaua’i Times will be a tabloid section of local
entertainment news and features and television schedules. From Sunday to
Sunday, it will be the source of what’s to see and do amid the island arts and
entertainment community, plus what’s on TV.
There are other changes for TGI
this weekend. Effective today, we’re redesigning the layout to improve the
paper’s visual appeal and readability.
We’re also repackaging our
content-and, in some cases, creating new sections that we think will appeal to
readers. A prime example is FYI, which every day on page 2-A will include
information on weather and tides (eventually surf reports, too), obituaries and
other information and photos of local interest. Depending on the day of the
week, you’ll also find police reports and birth announcements. Other content is
being planned, which we’ll announce as it becomes available.
Something
that’s both old and new starts today, too. The Forum section-up to now
published only three days a week-will become a daily fount of broad-based
opinions and debate, including local and nationally syndicated columnists,
letters to the editor and TGI’s own editorial viewpoints.
These changes and
others-some already in place, others evolving incrementally-are part of our
effort to cover the Kaua’i community while also keeping its citizens in tune
with the rest of Hawai’i and the world.
Our focus will be local: Features
on people, broader coverage of education and religion, government reporting and
sports. The latter will include morning-after coverage of local Friday-night
high school and University of Hawai’i football games.
We hope you’ll like
what you see and read. Let us know what you think.
