The Garden Island’s monthly wish list

With August over and a new month beginning, we wish:

* Luck to the

University of Hawaii’s football team as it prepares for a new season that

hopefully will build on the phenomenal turnaround of the 1999 campaign.

For no more close calls with widespread blackouts like the one that Kaua’i

Electric and its customers sweated out Aug. 24.

* That the 105-year-old

banyan tree in Nawilwili has the continued long life that a committee of

supporters is trying to ensure.

* That emotional reunions like the one

between North and South Korean relatives separated for 50 years will spur

reconciliation between the two countries.

* That the test today of the

emergency response siren system on Kaua’i isn’t followed any time soon by the

real thing.
