KAPA`A — Nakoa edged Aikane Foundation 7-6 for the championship of the “A”
Division in the 25th Annual State Senior Softball Tournament that concluded at
the New Kapa`a Ball Park on Friday afternoon.
Kaua`i’s Rookies finished the
tournament in fourth place after falling to the Hawaiians 13-6 in that same
division.
Action in the “B” Division drew the keenest interest from Kaua`i
spectators as West Kaua`i went up against the Waimea Paniolos for the title of
that division.
The Paniolos took advantage of their hitting momentum and
charged onto the scoreboards early, chalking up three runs on four hits
including a 2-run in-the-park homer by Dick Cushnie while keeping West Kaua`i
off balance in the first inning.
The Waimea bats continued to pound as the
Paniolos added another seven runs in the second inning and never looked back as
they clinched an 11-6 win, relegating West Kaua`i into the runner-up
berth.
In addition to the Waimea Paniolos, Big Island teams topped all the
other divisions as Paipaikou topped the Golden Eagles 9-7 for the “C” Division
titile, and Kona Gold blanked Hamakua 5-0 for the “D” Division
championships.
East Kaua`i shut down the Maui Ohana 15-0 for fifth place
honors in the “C” Division with the Lihu`e A’s winning their first game of the
series 10-3 over Car Quest to nail down seventh place in that same
bracket.
The K-Makule fell to Harley’s Davidson’s 18-7 for fourth place
honors in the “D” Division, and Kawaihau, after roaring out to a 20-8 opening
over the Hui O Kolohe, clinched seventh place with another 19-9 showing against
RME of Maui.
The tournament was hosted by the Kaua`i Senior Centers
Softball Association with support from the county’s Department of Public Works,
the Fire Department, and numerous other community-minded volunteers from the
various softball teams.
