Yesterday afternoon at about 4:15, my phone rang. A warm, confidence-inspiring male voice asked if this was Jean Holmes I agreed it was.
And did I still live on Kaua’i?
I allowed as how I did.
He: “Have you heard of Ed McMahon and Dick Clark?” Me: (With little enthusiasm) “Yes.” He: “Well, you have won a car.” Me: (with even less enthusiasm) “That’s nice.” He: “But we are in California.” Me. “That’s nice. It is a fine state.” He: (Somewhat bewildered) “But the car’s here, too.” Me: “And what am I supposed to send you to get the car?” He: (Sharply) “Have you won a car from us before?” Me: “No, but I know people who have.” He: (Abruptly breaks the connection, leaving me with a dial tone.) Anyone else get a call from this charming con man?
